Parent Info newsletter

Dear Parent Info subscribers,

We were interested to read the actress Kate Winslet's comments this week. The Titanic star was quoted as saying that she doesn't allow social media in her house and that she believes smart phones can impact negatively on family life.

The actress, who was promoting her new film, Steve Jobs, based on the life of the man who launched the iPhone and therefore paved the way for many of us to welcome social media into our lives, voiced the fears of many adults who grew up before the advent of Facebook and Twitter.

For young people, sharing their life online with others seems as natural as filling a photo album with pictures of our friends was to those of us born before the internet age.

So how do you deal with this technological generation gap?

Here at Parent Info, we feel the best way is to try to understand the world our young people are inhabiting. That way, we'll be in a better position to advise and protect them, should they need it. Which is why we offer information for parents and carers on the apps and platforms their children are using.

This week, for instance, we publish our guide to WhatsApp - something  that's grabbed the imagination of adults and young people alike. We also look at nine ways in which the internet can actually be good for children.

We hope you'll let parents know about our new content on a regular basis, and remind them to look at Parent Info every week.

In the meantime, please contact us at support@parentzone.org.uk if you have any thoughts on the site, or would like us to cover any particular topic.

Have a lovely weekend,

Eleanor and the Parent Info team

Parliament workshop

Year 6 pupils getting a feel for working conditions down the mine in the 1900's. All of them exhausted after just 1 minute of work....back then children of their age would work for 15 hours a day!

Then they moved on to considering how women got the vote and designed a banner to support the suffragette cause.
